Agile Project Management Vs. Traditional Project Management

Project management has been the primary pillar of foundation in the new industries. Not only that, but even the old industries are also upgrading themselves to follow project management methodology. However, there is a discussion that has been going on recently; Is Agile project management better than traditional project management?

Before knowing the differences, it is essential to know the definition of the above two project management methodologies. The traditional method of project management is also known as the waterfall approach. It follows the linear form of project management, where all the phases of the project occur in a specific sequence. The whole project is planned without any scope or space for any change in the requirements.

On the other hand, the Agile methodology is the method that focuses on teamwork and customer involvement. Here, the whole project is divided into several parts, after which the team works on it. Here, continuous updates about the project are provided to the stakeholders and the clients. It even involves the clients in the project. But, why is Agile methodology is preferred over the traditional approach? Below are the answers to this question. Project Complexity

When it comes to project complexity, the traditional method of project management is suitable for less complicated projects, which can be quickly done with the help of the linear process. Here, if there are any sudden changes, the whole team has to start again from the first step.

On the other hand, the Agile methodology is suitable for any complex project. Here, even if there are any sudden changes, the team does not have to start from the first step. Rather they can adapt to the change and implement it in the ongoing process. Hence, Agile methodology is preferred for large and complex projects.


Space For Feedback & Changes

The traditional method clearly states the scope of the project at the beginning. Meanwhile, one cannot get any feedback while the project is going on. Only when the project is completed, a person can know the outcome and give feedback. In addition to that, in the traditional method, there is no space for any change.

Agile methodology provides space for both feedback and changes even when the project is going on. A person can get continuous output results when each task is completed. Based on the outcome, a person can provide feedback and suggest any changes. These changes are then implemented on the ongoing project.



When it comes to adaptability, the traditional methodology has no space for this term. In the case of the traditional approach of project management, if a part of the project is done, there is no going back for reviewing the part again. The traditional approach fails to adapt to new changes, which is not quite appropriate for complex projects.

The Agile methodology for project management has a high adaptability factor as compared to the traditional process. Here, the phases are connected, and if a change occurs, then all the other phases adapt to the new change in the project. This makes it easier for the team to meet up to the expectations of the changing demands of the customer. 



In the traditional approach to project management, there is no space for transparency. Here, the clients and the stakeholders cannot get involved in the project. Moreover, they get the results of the project at the end, and there are no chances of getting any updates.

However, the same is not the case in Agile methodology. Here, the project team involves the stakeholders and the customers in the project and gives them continuous updates about the project. Moreover, the whole team knows everything about the project as there is transparency in the work of the project.

One can see that Agile methodology is far better than the traditional approach to project management. The Agile methodology helps the company in handling complex projects in a better way, and it even gives the clients a chance to add more changes to the project. Though the traditional approach is good for simple projects, it cannot be used for big and complex projects. Currently, most of the industries have dumped the traditional approach and are shifting towards the Agile method of project management.
